Testing the ‘Vineyard Geologic Identity’ concept in Marquette-producing vineyards in the Champlain Valley, Vermont, USA

The recently formalized concept of ‘Vineyard Geological Identity’ (VGI) was applied to two vineyards in the Champlain Valley Vermont, USA. studied, LP and SV, both produce hybrid grape known as ‘Marquette’, are at equivalent elevations, have a similar macroclimate, were inundated by proglacial Lake Vermont during last deglaciation. In contrast, bedrock differs beneath sites, SV under shallow marine water immediately after drained. hypothesis tested that despite their physical settings, VGI would vary result differences late-Quaternary histories. Samples soil sediment evaluated for grain size distribution, thermogravimetric analysis, mineralogy, major element chemistry, standard fertility assessments, map conductivity made each site. Results reveal base cations silt significantly more abundant LP. Conversely, Na is abundant, samples coarser higher. These results illuminate utility defining fingerprint individual vineyards, establish foundation future work evaluating role setting controlling aspects Marquette wines.
